Every Taiwanese family has a habit of receiving red envelopes. Some students say their family requires a blessing or a talent show before receiving one. Some say their family has set down a rule that one could no longer receive a red envelope after graduating. This rule makes her want to continue her study into a master's degree and a doctorate degree.
New Year’s Eve dinner is for a family to have a reunited meal together on Lunar New Year’s Eve. In Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Singapore, and Malaysia, they would call it “regiment year dinner” or “reunion dinner.” In Southern Fujian and Taiwan, they would call it “around the fireplace.” Taiwanese students suggest that the elder would tell them not to bite off the leaf mustard because it means having longevity. Chinese students say the whole family would make dumplings on Lunar New Year. They would make special “taro dumplings” which is a traditional specialty made by taro.

During the Lunar New Year, students also share some customs besides eating no matter what countries or areas they are from. Such as, the elder would remind us not to quarrel or cry because it could bring bad juju and to avoid sweeping the floor or taking out of the trash because it would take away the wealth in our family. They believe abiding by these customs would bring good luck.
