Taipei City ranks “4th in Asia” in the 2021 “Safe Cities Index”

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU, 經濟學人智庫) announced the results of the "2021 Safe Cities Index". The safest city in the world is Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, with a score of 82.4. This time, the five indicators used as basis for the scores are “personal safety", "environmental safety", "digital safety", "public health", and "infrastructure". For the first time this year, "ecological and environmental safety" was included as a basis for assessment. Taipei city’s rank was slightly down from the previous session due to "personal safety", ranking 24th globally, and ranking 4th in Asia.

The top five safest cities in 2021 are Copenhagen, Denmark; Toronto, Canada; Singapore, Sydney, Australia; and Tokyo, Japan; the top three safest cities in Asia are Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Taipei ranks 24th in the world and 4th in Asia, which is a slight decline from 22nd in 2019.

The ranking of 7 major cities in Southeast Asia are Singapore (3), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (32), Bangkok, Thailand (43), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (45), Jakarta, Indonesia (46), and Manila, Philippines (51) And Yangon, Myanmar (60). Compared to the 2019 report, Singapore dropped by one place, Manila dropped by eight places, and Yangon dropped by two places, ranking last in the rankings this year. Kuala Lumpur improved by 2 places, Bangkok improved by 4 places, Ho Chi Minh City improved by 2 places, and Jakarta improved by 7 places, which is the highest improvement.

In addition, Taiwan’s overall epidemic prevention has given Taipei a lot of points which the whole world can see. In 2021, the Covid-19 epidemic was considered as a basis for ranking for the first time. This time, Taipei scored an average of 74 points for the five major indicators, with the "Infrastructure" score as the highest at 82.4. "Personal Safety" was the lowest at 63.2 which was the biggest decline. The "Environmental Safety" indicator, which was included for the first time in response to the epidemic, received a good score of over 80 points.
