The "Let's Talk Youth Politics - Let's Talk" program, promoted by the Youth Development Administration of the Ministry of Education, has entered its seventh year. From July to September this year, 34 deliberative democracy public discussions on "Housing Justice" will be held across Taiwan. One of these discussions will focus on "The Housing Dilemma of Young Migrant Workers." The proposer, Li Yijing, is calling on the public to register and participate, contributing to housing justice for new residents and migrant workers.

The Housing Dilemma of Young Migrant Workers

Li Yijing, a first-year graduate student in Political Science at National Chengchi University, participated in the "Let's Talk Youth Politics - Let's Talk" program last year. As a second-generation immigrant, she hopes that public discussions can include the perspectives of migrant workers. She realized that this year's discussion theme is "Housing Justice" and immediately thought of the housing difficulties that migrant workers might face in Taiwan. Li Yijing mentioned that some partners shared stories of new resident mothers who, after divorce, often struggled to find housing because of their accent or because landlords doubted their financial stability. Although migrant workers have factory dormitories, the conditions are often poor, and those who wish to rent outside are often rejected due to prejudice and discrimination.

Together with Yang Yunzhen and Liu Guanyou, who are actively involved in public affairs, Li Yijing proposed "The Housing Dilemma of Young Migrant Workers," which was approved by the Youth Development Administration. The deliberative democracy discussion is scheduled for August 25 in Tainan's Anping District Social Welfare Complex Building, using the "Vision Workshop" model. She explained that the event would use scripts to simulate the problems and living conditions faced by new residents in renting, such as playing the roles of landlords and new resident mothers, discussing the difficulties encountered in the rental process, and exploring possible solutions. The proposal team for "The Housing Dilemma of Young Migrant Workers" (Image / Sourced from the Let's Talk Youth Politics official website)

Li Yijing welcomes landlords, migrant worker brokers, NGO workers, new residents, migrant workers, and young people to register and participate. She hopes that through this deliberative democracy discussion, feasible suggestions will be proposed and submitted to relevant public departments to improve the living environment of migrant workers, enhance the quality of life, and promote social harmony and progress.
