The COVID-19 new variant Omicron, which could dodge vaccines, was discovered in South Africa. In response to this variant that has raised high alert worldwide, the Thai government will ban passengers traveling from 8 African countries, including South Africa, from entering the country from December 1. Passengers from other countries in Africa will need to serve a 14-day quarantine.

The Department of Disease Control of the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand announced that starting from December 1, it will ban the passengers traveling from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe from entering Thailand.

Thailand will reopen its border from November 1 to allow fully vaccinated travelers from 63 countries and regions to enter Thailand without having to serve quarantine. However, travelers who are not on the list but are fully vaccinated, are still eligible for the re-opening scheme dubbed the “sandbox”. This group of people do not need to serve quarantine in the designated Changwat and can enter other parts of Thailand after 7 days.
