The Health Promotion Administration (HPA) has been promoting dementia-friendly communities for the seventh consecutive year, continuing to collaborate with local governments and private organizations to actively create dementia-friendly environments. In response to the 2024 International Dementia Month, the HPA released a dementia-friendly documentary film, that captured over 4,890 hours, showcasing creativity from various regions and Taiwan's unique lifestyle and culture, emphasizing the importance of dementia-friendly communities.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of people aged 65 and above with dementia in Taiwan is approximately 350,000 this year (2024). It is projected to increase to 470,000 by 2031. As Taiwan approaches a super-aged society, the number of elderly people with dementia within communities is steadily rising. How to prevent dementia and create dementia-friendly communities has become a critical issue that society must address together.Ten Warning Signs of Dementia (Photo / Retrieved from the Health Promotion Administration Website)

The HPA promotes prevention strategies such as "keeping the mind active, exercising more, maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in social activities, and sustaining a healthy body weight," and reminds the public to assess and diagnose health issues early. According to a public opinion survey in 2023, over 70% of the public has a correct understanding of dementia. HPA Director Wu Zhao-jun stated, “If people can diagnose and prevent dementia in time, it will not only slow the progression of the disease but also enhance society’s understanding and acceptance of those with dementia, allowing them to live with dignity.”

To showcase the achievements of dementia-friendly communities, the HPA launched a documentary film with four themes: "Happiness with a Taiwanese Flavor," "Convenient Happiness," "Happiness Beyond Boundaries," and "Companionship in Happiness." The film highlights local features such as Taiwanese glove puppetry, traditional markets, and local stores, as well as the practical implementation of dementia-friendly outposts like pharmacies and convenience stores. Additionally, diverse venues such as borderless campuses, cultural exhibition halls, and zoos have also joined the dementia-friendly movement, demonstrating Taiwan's efforts to support those with dementia.

The HPA emphasizes that dementia does not equate to disability and encourages people with dementia to use their talents and participate in social activities. The film features elderly students from Rui Zhi Yi Learning Center who perform glove puppetry, showcasing the capabilities and vitality of those with dementia while also highlighting intergenerational interactions between children and the elderly. The HPA hopes that all sectors of society will continue to care for and support people with dementia, collectively promoting a dementia-friendly environment and building a happier Taiwan.
