Association of Development and Communication for New Immigrants, Cathay Charity Foundation, New Residents Language Learning Support Center of K-12 Education Administration of Ministry of Education, the local schools in Chunghua, the service center of Legislator Lin Lichan, and Association of Asia Talents jointly held the 4th New Residents Advantage Forum with the Cooperation of Mothers, Children, and Schools for New Resident Cultivation Program Proposals Contest on January 1 at the National YuanLin Senior High School. The forum invited Pan Linyan, who is a second-generation child of the new resident, already passed the Immigration officer exam: Vietnamese and was invited to share the advantages to a second-generation child in the morning.
Pan Linyan states that she is from a new resident family in Puli, Nantou, and her mother is from Vietnam. She majored in Southeast Asian Studies at the National Chi Nan University and didn't know anything about Vietnamese before university. She started learning her mother's language after university and build more connections with her mother's hometown, Vietnam.
Pan Linyan, as a half-year exchange student, went to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the second semester of senior year for studying Vietnamese in Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This experience made her understand stepping outside of Taiwan needed courage. The first she needed to overcome was the language when in a foreign country, and she gradually could relate to the discomfort of her mother when she first came to Taiwan.
Pan Linyan faced future employment problems after returning to Taiwan. It occurred to her that the organizer encouraged them to take the exam held by the National Immigration Agency if possible when she participated in the Second Generation Young Cultivation Workshop. She could meet the practical needs with her skills because the NIA's nature of the job provides her an opportunity to make good use of Vietnamese. Besides, she could serve migrant workers and new residents in Taiwan, so she took the immigration officer exam. She was admitted to the Vietnamese sector of the immigration officer exam in 2018 and now serves in Chunghua Brigade.
Pan Linyan thinks that compared with the past environment of schools, the schools nowadays have become more capable of embracing multiculturalism and the second-generation new resident that can also freely exercise their abilities.
