In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, Joyce will accompany her British friend Allan (@ifeintaiwan - 英國叔叔)to Taiwan to attend the Matsu Pilgrimage, a yearly religious celebration. She will furthermore do random interviews with foreigners there.

Joyce was lucky to be in the front of the Matsu Pilgrimage group when the Sedan chair departures. She was able to capture this moment and successfully begin a visit in front of the temple. Joyce started by interviewing with a foreigner who had taken part in Pilgrimage five times. According to him, pilgrimage offers a chance to learn about Taiwanese culture. Matsu would assist his family in making prayers for health and luck, while some individuals would pray to aid them with their studies and cure their sicknesses. He takes part in Pilgrimage every year since he genuinely worships Matsu.

Additionally, Joyce made the acquaintance of two foreigners from Spain named Robert and Manuel who were taking part in this important event for the first time. After hearing Manuel say that he had spent seven months in Taiwan and intended to learn as much as possible about the local way of life, he made the decision to attend the Matsu Pilgrimage after seeing some documentary images about it.

Robert claimed that he learned about this event via friends in Taiwan because he was interested in participating and his friend Manuel was also interested in seeing different cultures. Along with two Spanish friends, Joyce also shared that a blessing-giving journey will be a pert of the Matsu Pilgrimage, the Pilgrimage will stop at temples all across the country. A birthday celebration was ultimately conducted in Chiayi. She found out through interviews that the two Spanish friends would go on an adventure for at least four days in addition to taking part in the departure ceremony. Through this excursion, they would be able to enjoy the passion of Taiwanese people.
