According to Scammers target online holiday shoppers | Inquirer Business, due to the customary spike in consumer spending, particularly on presents for friends and family, cybersecurity company Kaspersky issued a warning about scammers taking advantage of the Christmas season and the boost in online shopping.

According to Scammers target online holiday shoppers | Inquirer Business, Kaspersky security researcher Tatyana Kulikova told the Inquirer that in the most recent quarter, fraudsters increased their attempts to conduct phishing attacks.

People tend to buy on impulse and make snap judgments during this season. Online shoppers may become distracted by the need to score a good bargain or purchase gifts, which might leave them less equipped to handle a cyber disaster and provide hackers more opportunities to exploit them, according to Kulikova.

Cybercriminals take advantage of the fact that many IT (information technology) employees of companies are on holiday during this time of year, Kulikova continued. According to Scammers target online holiday shoppers | Inquirer Business, holiday presents and greetings are common disguises used by phishers, according to Kulikova.

Typically distributed through emails and text messages, these cyberthreats include dubious links that direct victims to phishing websites. According to Scammers target online holiday shoppers | Inquirer Business, users may fall victim to fraud on these websites, tricking them into divulging sensitive information such as contact and bank account data.

Because hackers can use the unlawfully obtained information to take over accounts, experts have long advised against clicking on these links.

Despite the country's introduction of SIM card registration, SMS scams, a type of phishing, continue to exist, according to the Kaspersky representative. The hackers' anonymity is eliminated with this approach.
