AI Boom Squeezes Memory Supply, Driving Up Prices for iPads, Switches and Other Gadgets
Consumers planning to buy a new tablet, laptop, or gaming console may need to prepare for higher prices. As artificial intelligence continues to expand, technology companies are investing heavily in AI data centers, dramatically increasing demand for high-performance memory chips. The resulting supply shortage has already pushed up prices for products including Apple's iPad and MacBook, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Valve's Steam Deck, with analysts expecting the trend to continue.Industry experts say memory manufacturers are prioritizing production for AI servers, which require large volumes of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM. Because building new semiconductor fabrication plants takes several years, the global memory shortage is expected to last until at least 2028. Even after new capacity comes online, analysts believe prices may remain above previous levels.The impact is beginning to weigh on consumer demand. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), global PC shipments are forecast to decline by 11.3% in 2026, while the smartphone market could experience its steepest annual drop in years. Products such as smartwatches and wireless earbuds are expected to be less affected because they require significantly less memory.For consumers who already plan to purchase a laptop, tablet, or gaming console, analysts suggest buying sooner rather than later to avoid additional price increases. However, shoppers should also consider product launch schedules. Apple, for example, typically introduces new iPhones in September and updates its iPad and Mac lineup in March or October.Certified refurbished devices are another cost-saving option. Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and other retailers offer professionally inspected and tested refurbished products at lower prices than new models. Experts recommend avoiding devices that are several generations old, as they may require replacement sooner due to limited software support.
