Yunlin Provides Guidelines for Migrant Workers to Work and Live in Peace

The total number of migrant workers in Yunlin County has been increasing year by year and currently exceeds 20,000. To allow these migrant workers who have come to live and work in peace in Taiwan, Director Zhang Shizhong of the Labor Affairs Department of Yunlin County Government indicates that due to several factors, such as differences of nationalities, living environments, and customs, some migrant workers who are new to Taiwan are likely to misunderstand and violate Taiwanese acts and get fined. Therefore, here are 4 guidelines of regulations provided to remind migrant workers in Taiwan of not violating laws:

  • Diet: Owing to different national customs and traditions, it is forbidden to eat and harm cats and dogs in Taiwan. If anyone violated the Animal Protection Act, he or she would be prosecuted or convicted, and the Ministry of Labor will abolish his or her employment permit and deport forcibly with a limit of time.
  • Transportation: Due to electric bikes being one of the main means of transportation for migrant workers to commute, it is advised to wear helmets when riding, avoid drunk driving, speeding, and re-equipping vehicles, and follow traffic rules.
  • Immigration: Since the African swine fever has severely impacted the national security in recent years, the government prohibits passengers from bringing animals and relevant products (including meat floss, jerky, animal-derived Chinese medicine, cured meat, bacon, hams, meatballs, vacuum packaging of meat products, fruits, flowers, fresh spices ) into Taiwan or by post.
  • Gambling and Drugs: Some workers may gamble or take drugs in their spare time in dorms. However, people who are suspected of gambling, taking drugs, or drug trafficking will be brought to justice. Gambling and taking drugs not only endangers physical and mental healths but also affects workers' right to work in Taiwan.
