【Taiwan Immigrants' Global News Network】According to the TAIWAN TODAY, President Tsai Ing-wen said Nov. 16 that the state-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute has been one of the driving forces bolstering Taiwan’s industries for four decades, spotlighting the government’s commitment to making the country an integral part of global supply chains.
Through developing technology and fostering talent, ITRI has helped Taiwan stand out on the world stage, Tsai said. Its abundant R&D capabilities have played a pivotal role in Taiwan’s COVID-19 response, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during the award ceremony for five new ITRI laureates held in Taipei City. She praised the honorees as leaders in their respective disciplines who have helped the country become a global center of innovation.
Among the laureates are Miin Wu, chairman and CEO of Hsinchu City-based Macronix International Co. in northern Taiwan, and Rick Tsai, vice chairman and CEO of Hsinchu City-headquartered MediaTek Inc. The former is responsible for introducing the concept of digital transformation into the semiconductor manufacturing process thirty years ago at the world’s leading non-volatile memory maker, while the latter is credited for leading the firm in developing 5G technology.

Other new laureates include Yang Pan-chyr, former president of National Taiwan University; Grace Yeh, chairman and CEO of Onward Therapeutics SA; and Cheng Wu, general partner at Taiwan Capital Management.
Founded in 1973, ITRI fosters innovation-driven sectors in Taiwan, with recent research endeavors focusing on such fields as quality health, smart cities and sustainable development. It has helped incubate over 270 high-tech companies, including global integrated circuit powerhouse Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (DL-E)
