TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- As a convective cloud system has formed over northern Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued a heavy rain advisory for five counties and cities and an extremely heavy rain advisory for three counties and cities, while flooding and rock slides were reported in central Taiwan.
The CWB has issued a heavy rain advisory for New Taipei City, Taipei City, Keelung City, Yilan County, and Miaoli County. The bureau has issued an extremely heavy rain advisory for Taoyuan city, Hsinchu County, and Hsinchu City. It has also issued a dense fog advisory for Lienchiang County and Kinmen County.
The CWB said that a strong convective cloud system will move into northern and northeastern Taiwan before noon today (May 17). Currently, some areas of Taoyuan and Hsinchu have already reported heavy rain, while Miaoli and areas south will be affected by southwest winds and could see local showers or thunderstorms.
The CWB said that due to heat convection there will be a high probability of heavy rain in mountainous areas in the afternoon. People are advised to carry an umbrella when going out and use caution when driving.
The CWB issued a special report at 7:20 a.m. saying that a convective cloud system is developing rapidly and will likely bring short bursts of heavy rainfall. The report stated that local heavy downpours are likely in Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli, Taipei, and Yilan.
At 7:44 a.m., the CWB also issued an instant message warning of heavy thunderstorms in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli counties. It reminded people in these areas to take precautions against heavy downpours, lightning strikes, strong gusts above level 9 on the Beaufort scale, hail, surging streams or rivers, flooding in low-lying areas, and low visibility.
As for temperatures, when it is not raining, conditions will feel muggy. High temperatures in Taiwan are expected to range between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius. At night and in the early morning, low temperatures are expected to range between 23 and 25 degrees.
A flash flood was reported on Thursday evening (May 16) below the bridge between Caotun and Guoxing townships in Nantou County. The flood quickly engulfed a gravel truck, but it was safely pulled to shore by an excavator.
In addition, heavy rain caused a rock slide on Provincial Highway 14, causing it to be closed to traffic. Three vehicles were struck by falling rocks, including a large SUV which sustained a large hole in its hood.
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from the flood or rock slide.
