As online and retail cosmetic products become increasingly diverse, the Miaoli County Government Health Bureau recently announced the results of its annual cosmetics inspection to safeguard consumer safety. This year, inspections of online and physical sales channels resulted in 136 violations. Most cases involved false or exaggerated advertising claims or implied medical effects, while others included improper labeling, selling products without completing registration, or the use of prohibited ingredients. Total fines exceeded NT$6 million.

The Health Bureau noted that some businesses use misleading or exaggerated language in advertisements to attract consumers, even suggesting medical benefits, which violates regulations and may pose health risks. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and avoid making purchases based solely on online reviews or promotional claims.

The bureau urges consumers to follow the three principles of “Stop, Look, Listen” when purchasing cosmetics. “Stop” impulsive buying and rationally assess product claims; “Look” carefully at packaging or container labels, including manufacturing dates, expiration dates, and business information, to avoid products of unknown origin or expired items; and “Listen” carefully but do not blindly believe exaggerated or medically claimed advertising.Consumers are advised to follow the stop look and listen principles when purchasing cosmetics(Photo Taoyuan City Health Bureau)Consumers are advised to follow the stop look and listen principles when purchasing cosmetics(Photo Taoyuan City Health Bureau)

In addition, the cosmetics product registration system has been implemented since 2021. Consumers can use the “Cosmetics Product Registration Platform – Public Inquiry Version” on mobile devices or computers to check product names, registered companies, and related information, improving transparency and safety.

The Health Bureau also reminds manufacturers, importers, and retailers to comply with regulations and properly implement product registration and labeling to protect consumer rights and maintain market order.
