Neglecting Oral Health Leads to Worsening Dental Problems
Many people neglect their oral health due to their busy schedules, leading to worsening dental issues. According to a survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 78.8% of adults in Taiwan have periodontal problems, making periodontal disease the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Dentist Huang Xiangyun stated that periodontal disease is a chronic inflammation caused by bacterial infection. Common symptoms include red and swollen gums, bleeding when brushing, and bad breath. As the condition worsens, it may lead to gum recession, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss.Periodontal issues should be treated early by a specialist to avoid greater damage. Beware of Life-Threatening Complications of Periodontal Disease
Early symptoms of periodontal disease are not obvious and often go unnoticed. It can lead to alveolar bone resorption, and gum abscesses, and even affect overall health, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Huang Xiangyun pointed out that many people fear periodontal surgery and delay treatment, which ultimately leads to tooth loss. With advances in medical technology, current water laser treatments can assist in periodontal therapy, reducing the necessity for surgery and increasing the chances of preserving natural teeth.
New Treatment Methods for Those Afraid of Surgery
Huang Xiangyun treated a 36-year-old Mr. Chen, who sought help due to recurring swelling in his front teeth gums. The initial diagnosis by the dentist found pus when pressing the gums, suspecting the need for tooth extraction or surgery. Diagnosed by a periodontal specialist with moderate to severe periodontal disease, it was recommended to use water laser treatment. This successfully resolved the gum abscess and preserved the natural teeth. After a period of treatment and follow-up, the patient's gums no longer swelled or bled during brushing. A CT scan a year and a half later showed significant improvement in periodontal condition, bone regeneration, and no recurrence of periodontal disease. 78.8% of adults in Taiwan have periodontal issues. Understanding the Principles of Water Laser Treatment
Water laser treatment is a minimally invasive and gentler method. It attaches laser energy to water molecules, using water as a medium to generate high-speed kinetic energy, creating a micro-explosion effect for cutting, sterilizing, and loosening calculus. Huang Xiangyun explained that water lasers can almost replace traditional periodontal flap surgery, allowing deep cleaning without cutting the gums, reducing discomfort, shortening treatment time, and offering faster recovery, making it an ideal choice for busy patients.
Long-Term Battle Against Periodontal Disease
Huang Xiangyun reminded us that preventing periodontal disease is a long-term battle, requiring regular check-ups and good daily oral hygiene practices. Facing periodontal problems, it is important to seek treatment from a specialist early to avoid delaying the condition and causing greater damage.
