Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Program issued by NIA to help Indonesian couples get married

To avoid potential loopholes of Covid-19, the National Immigration Agency  (NIA) has issued the "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Program" to encourage foreign overstayers to turn themselves in before June 30, 2020. During the designated period of this program, penalty relieves including no detention, no entry ban, and a minimum fine of NTD 2,000 are entitled. The purpose of this program is to encourage overstayers to turn themselves in so the Agency can help them return home safely”

A missing Indonesian worker, Wa di (娃蒂), used to be a caretaker in Taichung, woke up every morning and worked until midnight. She felt incredibly exhausted and decided to escape. She ducked around every day and was not able to return to Indonesia to marry her boyfriend. However, thanks to the "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Program", she was accompanied by her husband to go to Kaohsiung City Specialized Operation Brigades to turn herself in.

Wa di (娃蒂) said her boyfriend proposed to her many times, but she knew it was hard for them to get married because of her illegal status. She expressed gratitude for the "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Program" issued by the NIA that allowed her to returned to Indonesia to marry her boyfriend. During the interview, she and her boyfriend both smiled with tears, lauded Taiwan's policy, and promised to tell all of their Indonesian friends.
