National Immigration Agency New Taipei City Service Center collaborated with the New Taipei City Banqiao New Immigrant Family and Women Service Center to improve students' awareness of Southeast Asian culture in rural elementary schools. A Myanmar cultural event (緬麗飛行) was recently organized in New Taipei City's Gongliao Elementary School. A new immigrant (張麗英) from Myanmar was invited as the lecturer to the event.

The lecturer offered the popular local foods after describing the geographic setting and cultural traits of Myanmar at the start of the session. The participants were then given the opportunity to try the natural skin care product "Thanaka" from Myanmar, followed by a lively display of national costumes from that country. Lecturer also distributed the sago cake she had made to the participants before the class finished.

After the whole event, the participants experienced the authentic culture of Myanmar.

There are presently 2,923 Burmese living in Taiwan, and up to 1,540 Burmese residents reside in New Taipei City, according to the director (林財榮) o fNIA New Taipei City Service Center. They increased the diversity of our society while also bringing the culture and cuisine of their birthplace. The director (林財榮) also emphasized that National Immigration Agency's "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program" will come to an end on June 30 of this year. Those who have overstayed are urged to seize the opportunity to self-report.
