The Centers for Disease Control announced today (23) that a case of local dengue fever was newly diagnosed in Kaohsiung. The test confirmed it was the fourth type of dengue virus, and the number of infected people has increased to 23.
According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a case of local dengue fever was confirmed in Kaohsiung. It was a 60-year-old male from Sanmin District. He had no history of going abroad recently. The usual activities were mainly at his local residency (Anjili, Sanmin District); on the 11th and 14th of this month, he went to the area near Jin Shi Hu Market (Dingzhong Road and Dingjinhou Road) and to the National Museum of Science and Technology (Sanmin District, Kaohsiung) on the 21st.
On June 22, the case developed fever, headache, joint pain, back pain and sore bone. After diagnosing, the case was tested positive with virus NS1, and the dengue virus type 4 was confirmed on the the same day. At present, the patient remains in hospital, and his family members currently show no symptoms or health problems. According to the duration of the disease and his activities’ record, this is announced as the second case in Sanmin District. A total of 23 cases has been so far confirmed in the region.
The Centers for Disease Control said that according to the date of disease and the history of activities, it was the second case in Sanmin District. It is considered that the surrounding community of Jinshi Lake Market in Dingjinli, Sanmin District is the cause of the epidemic. The Anjili residence is also not excluded as a possible origin of infection.
Up to now, there has been 24 cases of local dengue fever in Taiwan (2019), and all live in Kaohsiung City. Among them, 23 cases are identified in Sanmin District.
The Centers for Disease Control reminded that due to local rainfall throughout the weekend, the indoor and outdoor environment of the residence should be cleaned up, and the removal of water containers should be strengthened to avoid mosquito breeding. If developing fever, headache, back eye socket pain, muscle and joint pain, rash and other suspected symptoms, please seek for medical care as soon as possible and provide the history of recent activities.
