Recently there is a rumor that people who have eaten long black spot on the skin mango, smelling bad and sour, will feeling unwell and deliver to the hospital for the emergency treatment. The Council of Agriculture (COA) on July 14 explained the diseases of the black spots in mango mainly caused by the anthracnose and black bundle. If it is just slightly damage, the affected area still edible to eat. But, if the mango has been obviously stinky, it is not advisable to eat it.

Summer is the season of mango production, where southern Taiwan is the major producer for this fruit. In recent years, new varieties of mangoes have been continuously developed. It is not only loved by the people in the country, but the export sales also open every year, people cannot help to buy it and bring it home. However, recently, some doctors on talk shows shared the cases that indicates the patients who has encountered a mango with black spots and sour smell had a symptom of nausea and vomit, rushed to the hospital for the treatment.

The mango expert of Kaohsiung Agricultural Improvement Field said that the black spots in mango mainly caused by the anthracnose and black bundle disease. It respectively affected by the specific pathogenic fungi and bacteria, causing black spots on the surface of the fruit. These germs do not infect the human body. If the surface of the mango is slightly damaged, the affected area is still edible and there is no security concern. But, if the mango is obviously corrupt with the change in color and taste, then it should be discarded and not able to be eaten.

There are many Taiwanese mango varieties, while the farmers have excellent cultivation techniques. But how do people taking care of it after they bought it home? Wu Junda (吳俊達) an associate professor of post-harvesting process in the NTU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Studies said that generally, the mangoes are ready to be eaten when they have been bought, either jade (玉文), jinhuang (金煌) or other varieties. If you buy mango, put it until it soft, ripe, and have a good aroma. If you are not eating it immediately, it should be placed in the refrigerator in order to maintain the best preservation status, better to eat it as soon as possible to taste the fresh taste of mangoes.
