Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Due to a lack of understanding, many people feel that life turns from color to black and white when they or their family members are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. However, doctors say that Parkinson's is not as frightening as it seems. Current medications and surgeries can effectively slow the progression of the disease, allowing patients to maintain their quality of life and functionality.
Dr. Chen Xinyuan, Director of the Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Treatment and Research Center at Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, emphasizes that Parkinson's disease is currently the only neurodegenerative disease that can be controlled long-term with medication. Patients can maintain a high quality of life through regular medication and surgical treatment. Many patients experience disease progression because they do not follow their doctor's advice on medication. The more typical the Parkinson's disease, the more effective the medication.

When the disease progresses to the mid to late stages, and the efficacy of medication shortens, causing fluctuations or drug-induced dyskinesia, "deep brain stimulation (DBS)" surgery can be considered. DBS surgery is suitable for patients with more than five years of disease history who respond well to levodopa therapy. The surgery involves implanting electrode wires into specific areas of the brain to regulate abnormal brain activity signals and control motor symptoms.
In addition to DBS, other surgical methods such as pallidotomy are no longer widely used due to higher risks and the inability to reduce medication usage. DBS surgery has several advantages, including health insurance coverage, effective improvement of tremors and rigidity, the possibility of bilateral surgery, and reduced medication dosage. However, DBS is not a cure and cannot eliminate Parkinson's symptoms.

Despite this, DBS remains the preferred treatment method for Parkinson's disease. Dr. Chen Xinyuan advises patients to choose certified treatment methods and avoid blindly pursuing expensive, unapproved therapies such as embryonic brain transplants and stem cell transplants. By following their doctor's advice on medication and continuing to exercise regularly, patients can effectively control their condition and improve their quality of life.
