According to FOCUS TAIWAN, an increase in electricity rates, which is imposed annually in summer in Taiwan to discourage high consumption, will take effect on June 1, with a potential maximum increase of 27 percent, the state-run Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower).

The higher summer rates, introduced in 1989, will be in effect June 1 to Sept. 30 this year (2021) and will be calculated for each household or company based on their consumption, Taipower said.

The average household consumption in Taiwan in summer 2020 was 434 kWh per month, compared with 291 kWh per month for the rest of the year, it said.

FOCUS TAIWAN says, power usage is likely to increase this summer amid the COVID-19 outbreak, which has resulted in more people staying at home to avoid the risk of infection, according to Taipower spokesperson Chang Ting-shu (張廷抒).
