African swine fever breaks out in Laos! EMIC warns do not bring pork products into Taiwan

The Central Emergency Operation Center (EMIC) said on June 20 that Laos informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about the occurrence of African swine fever, became the sixth in the Asian region following the Chinese mainland, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia and North Korea.

According to the OIE, the epidemic occurred in a pig farm in the southern province of Saravane. There were 7 cases field, and the total of 973 died pigs.

The EMIC said that in view of the successive occurrence of African swine fever in neighboring countries of Laos, since February 20 this year, the country was included in high-risk areas. The Aviation Police and the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine will jointly implement the fully checked baggage and hand luggage for incoming passengers.

At the moment when the epidemic spreads in Asia, the EMIC appealed that domestic pig farmers should speed up the biosafety measures of pig farms as soon as possible to prevent the invasion of epidemics and don’t break all the epidemic prevention efforts.

The EMIC also reminds travelers from both Taiwan and Laos that do not violate the regulations to bring pork products into Taiwan.
