Chiayi City Police Department's Second Precinct South Gate Station recently handled a suspected online dating scam case. A woman surnamed Cai met a man claiming to be a male model on the dating app "Tantan." The man, using the nickname "ㄎㄞˇ," interacted well with Cai and planned to meet in person. However, he claimed that a deposit was required before their meeting due to work reasons. Cai followed his instructions, purchasing points cards at convenience stores multiple times and providing the card numbers. The scammer continued to demand more points, causing Cai to become suspicious and worried about being scammed. She sought help at the police station.
After understanding the situation, the police immediately identified it as a typical "fake online dating scam" technique. Scammers use attractive photos and sweet talk on dating apps to gain trust, then request money or points cards and sometimes use threats to force victims to comply. With the police's warning, Cai realized she was being scammed and immediately stopped buying points. She expressed deep gratitude for the police's prompt assistance.
The police also provided additional anti-scam information, reminding the public to stay vigilant and instructing them on how to use the 165 anti-scam hotline or visit the police station for verification. The Chiayi City Police Department's Second Precinct calls on the public to be cautious with online dating and not to trust strangers asking for money or points cards to avoid becoming a scam victim.
