Taiwan Sees Record High Nearly 12 Million Visitors in 2019 and Expands Multiple Markets

The Tourism Bureau of Ministry of Transportation and Communications states that approximately 11.84 million visitors came to Taiwan last year with an increase of 7 % compared with the previous year. Among them, the Japanese market broke the 2 million mark, and the Japanese and Korean markets reached a new high record simultaneously. The visitors from 18 New Southbound countries increased by about 6% that has successfully opened up multiple markets.

 

The Tourism Bureau of Ministry of Transportation and Communications issued a press release on January 6 that of the total number of visitors coming to Taiwan in 2019, 2.71 million were from China with an increase of 0.5% compared to 2.7 million in 2018. For non-Chinese tourists, the number of visitors coming to Taiwan increased by 9%, reaching nearly 9.14 million.

 

The Tourism Bureau states that over the past year, the overall number of visitors coming to Taiwan has increased by 770,000 people approximately, which is not easy. In this highly competitive tourism market environment around the world, Taiwan is steadily striving for more types of customers and actively expanding the market in the two directions of "increasing international marketing channels, strengthening the establishment of important potential customers " and "expanding cross-border, cross-domain, and cross-industry cooperation to enhance Taiwan's international competitiveness in tourism".

 

In the section of international promotion and the devotion of setting up business bases, Taiwan has provided different specific themed awards to assist the tourism industry in rewarding customers, such as charter flight awards. In the fourth season of 2019, 38 flights back and forth between Hualien, Japan, and South Korea are promoted. Also, Gangwon of South Korea and Matsuyama of Japan launches new direct flights to Taiwan.

 

In terms of expanding cross-border, cross-domain and cross-industry cooperation, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has combined academic research strengths with the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, the National Taiwan Ocean University jointly signed the “Taiwan Cruise Development Research Memorandum of Understanding” and established a cruise tourism R&D center to expand publicity of markets in Asia and the world through the Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC) 

 

Besides, the Tourism Bureau enhances the richness and diversity of Taiwan's tourism resources and cooperates with the National Performing Arts Center, the units of railway and forests, educational tours, The Worldwide Exhibition for Incentive Travel, Meetings & Events (IMEX), cruise enterprises, port management agencies, and other units to establish cross-domain platforms to operate tourism orientation's resources and internationalization of publicity and provide international tourists with more options visiting Taiwan.
