According to [Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan)], the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to convene at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 14, with the General Debate to be held from September 21 to 27. The theme for this year’s UN General Assembly and General Debate will be “Building resilience through hope—to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations.” This reflects the earnest hope of the world, having been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic for over a year, for a stronger and more inclusive United Nations, so that the crisis may be resolved and progress made toward a stronger recovery and sustainable reconstruction.

According to [Taiwan Today], a short film urging the U.N. to give Taiwan a voice at the general assembly and other activities, mechanisms, and meetings of the world body was released Sept. 8 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“To Freedom” showcases Taiwan as a force for good committed to safeguarding human rights and advancing freedom for all. It comprises the personal stories of eight individuals spanning the areas of culture, gender, language, participatory democracy, religion, same-sex marriage, transitional justice, and rights of the physical and mentally challenged.

By demonstrating how the country’s diverse ethnic and religious groups are respected, the film underscores the government’s commitment to fulfilling the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, the MOFA said.
