India, the largest rice exporter in the world, outlawed the export of non-basmati white rice to other countries in July and then taxed ships carrying parboiled rice by 20% in an effort to control local pricing and guarantee an adequate supply of the grain for the home market.

India approved limited rice shipments to Bhutan, Mauritius, and Singapore in August, but according to a government source, the country is unlikely to accept any additional requests for rice supply until farmers have harvested their new season crop.
