Not only have overseas Chinese students and international students studying abroad grown in importance as a source of new students for many universities, but they are also highly sought after in the catering and hospitality sector. A number of hotels and hotel managers have noted that international students are not only diligent workers but also benefit from speaking many languages. Additionally, they operate mostly on weekends, which allows them to accommodate the weekend traffic in hotels and the hotel sector.

According to the general manager of a Taoyuan hotel, Taiwanese students are no longer inclined to pursue careers in catering as part time workers. Rather, international students work primarily on weekends, which aligns with the high volume of people in the hospitality and catering sectors on those days. Malaysian nationals are particularly well-liked by hotel businesses, and those who know both Chinese and English may get started right away. Furthermore, the presence of a Muslim certification within the hotel will aid in providing full services to Muslims living overseas.

Taiwan's falling birthrate in recent years has resulted in a shortage of students at several colleges. Taiwan's higher education now primarily draws enrolment from overseas Chinese and international students. The technical assistant professor (賴宗成) in the Department of Hospitality Management at Chien Hsin University stated that international students visiting Taiwan primarily come from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Vietnam accounts both the greatest and second-largest proportion of international students. citizens of Indonesia and the third-largest Malaysian ethnic group.
