The Philippine government proposed early this year, 2021, that it is willing to send medical workers to the United King (UK) and Germany. However since the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines is one of the most severe in Asia, there is a need to limit the number of medical staff being sent abroad. It is decided to focus more on supporting the local medical system.

According to statistics from the Philippines government, nearly 17,000 Filipino nurses were working overseas in 2019 and there was a limit of 5,000 staff members allowed to work overseas. Although the Philippine government hopes to lift the ban on overseas employment, its plans to exchange labor with vaccines. However, this decision has been questioned by medical staff for being treated as a commodity.

The number of confirmed cases in the Philippines continues to be very high, therefore the government decided to limit medical staff sent for overseas employment. The local government decided to focus more on the welfare of local Filipinos.
