To improve the bilingual education and English teaching in Kaohsiung, the College of English and International Studies of Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages has launched a program, "Kaohsiung City Bilingual Education Promotion and Foreign Teachers Training Program" (高雄市雙語教育推動暨外籍教師招募培訓計畫) to expand more teaching resources and cultivate high-qualified foreign teachers.
The courses of the program are held every two weeks. The first stage started in May, with a total of 11 foreign participants from the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, the Philippines, Nicaragua, and Namibia. Although some participants were already substitute teachers, they were still active in improving their English teaching skills. The questionnaires they filled out also showed that they affirmed the training team's expertise and the Education Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government's contributions to the training program.
Dean of the College of English and International Studies of Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Wu Qiuhui (吳秋慧), stated that hiring foreign teachers has two sides. They have foreign language skills but lack professional teaching training experiences. Hence, the purpose of the program is to provide various training courses to enhance the quality of Taiwan's English teaching.
