2020 Gender At A Glance Result, Taiwan Ranks First in Asia and 9th Globally for Gender Equality

The Executive Yuan just released the "2020 Gender At A Glance". According to the Gender Inequality Index (GII) compiled by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), five indicators in three areas of reproductive health, empowerment, and the labor market are used to measure gender equality in each country, and the data of Taiwan are calculated. Taiwan ranks 9th in the world and the1st in Asia.

The Gender Equality Committee (hereinafter the "GEC") of the Executive Yuan states that women's participation has continued to increase. In 2018, the percentage of female legislators in Taiwan hit a record high, accounting for 38.7%., and Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia have not reached one-third of Taiwan. Besides, the female ratio of county and city mayors have risen to 37.5%, with a significant increase of 31.2 % compared to the previous (2014) election rankings.

2019 is the first year of same-sex marriage. Since May 24, same-sex couples can register to marry. The number of same-sex couples who completed marriage registration from May to November totaled 2,623, of which 837 were male couples and 1,786 were female couples.

In terms of campus situation, according to the report cases of the Gender Equity Education Act, the victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault on campus were mainly female, accounting for 79.7% and 69.8%. The victims of sexual bullying were mainly male (87.2%). The number of victims of all types was the highest in middle schools(12-18 years old) at the time of the incidents.

Owing to females and males majoring in different subjects (sciences and arts), there is a gap between how much men and women are paid. The GEC indicates that in 2018, the average hourly salary gap between the sexes was 14.6%, which is smaller than that of the United States, Japan, and South Korea. However, the gender salary gap in healthcare, air transportation, computer electronics, and optical products manufacturing industry still exceeds 40%. Additionally, the initial Parental Leave Without Payment for males has increased over the past five years but still only accounts for 17.7%.
