Have you ever found expired canned food or noodles at home and hesitated about whether to throw them away? Most people think that once food expires, it can&rsquot be eaten. But in fact, the expiration date is just a recommended consumption period, not a definitive safety boundary.

According to the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, expiration dates are set by manufacturers based on storage conditions and food quality, primarily to ensure food safety and flavor. Many foods, even if past the date, are still safe to eat as long as they appear normal and show no signs of spoilage. Put it in the freezer before it expires to keep it fresh longer. The Food Network once compiled a list of 10 foods that can still be eaten after expiration, including canned goods, cheese, cereal, eggs, frozen food, cookies, butter, bread, packaged vegetables, and dried noodles. For example, undamaged canned food can be stored for up to 4 years, and completely dried noodles can last up to 3 years.

Dry goods, vacuum-sealed products, and sterilized foods are less prone to spoilage.

Although their taste and nutritional value may decline, they are generally still edible. The European Union is also promoting the removal of expiration dates on dry foods to reduce unnecessary waste, and British supermarket Tesco has taken the lead in implementing this policy. As long as there&rsquos no rancid smell or it hasn&rsquot turned powdery, it can still be eaten. The expiration date is not a definitive indicator of spoilage. Learning how to judge food quality and store it properly can help reduce waste and contribute to environmental sustainability.
