To enable new immigrants to recognize the characteristics of Hakka culture and respect cultural differences, Meinong Household Registration Office in Kaohsiung City organized the “2021 Annual Hakka Culture Visit & Activity” on November 7. An engaging way to have an in-depth understanding of rich Hakka culture is provided.

Activities include introducing Hakka dietary habits, Hakka costumes, and the history of the rise and fall of tobacco leaves. Besides, Hakka dialects are also taught by using folksongs. Participants also went to visit the ecological park, make traditional Hakka cuisine, learn about indigo dye and magnolia plants.

The director of Meinong Household Registration Office Li Kun Shou (李坤守) says “The social circle of new immigrants in Taiwan is mostly confined to family or workplace, and they rarely have the opportunity to be exposed to Taiwan's multiculturalism.”

Therefore, the Taiwan Hakka New Immigrants Cultural and Economic Exchange Association (台灣客家新住民文經交流協會) applied for subsidies under the scheme of New Immigrants Development, and organized this activity.

Through the activities, new immigrants will be able to learn more about unique Hakka cultures. At the same time, it also further promotes collaboration and resource exchanges between the government, schools, communities, and the private sectors.
