CECC announces nine new local cases are linked to Case #1203

On May 13, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) confirms 13 more indigenous cases, including 9 cases linked to Case #1203 and four cases linked to cluster in teahouses in Wanhua District.

CECC announced 13 new confirmed indigenous cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Those new cases (Cases #1245-1257) are all Taiwanese nationals. Nine of those new cases are linked to the cluster associated with Case #1203, and the other four are linked to the cluster in the teahouses in Taipei's Wanhua District.

Case #1203 is a Taiwanese male in his 60s. He experienced fatigue, coughing, and chills on May 7. On May 9, he sought medical care for fever at a hospital and was tested. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 11. The public venues visited by Case #1203 are listed below.

Regarding Cases #1245, Case #1246, Case #1248, Case #1250, Case #1251, Case #1253, and Cases #1255-1257, the nine cases are seven men and two women whose ages range from 30 to 89 years old. Of the nine individuals, four were asymptomatic while the other five experienced symptoms (the onset of symptoms was between May 6 and May 11). The nine individuals all dined in the same restaurant as Case #1203 and were identified as contacts. They were tested, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on May 13.

Case#1247, Case #1252 and Case #1254 are a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 30s and a woman in her 50s, who work at three different teahouses in Taipei's Wanhua District. The three women began to experience symptoms between May 8 and May 10. They visited the hospital to seek medical care and undergo testing, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on May 13.

Case #1249 is a Taiwanese man in his 60s. He developed a cough on May 5. He experienced a fever and muscle pain on May 7. He then sought medical attention at a clinic on May 10. Because his fever persisted, he visited the hospital to seek medical care and undergo testing; infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 13.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 220,708 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 217,290. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 1256 cases. Of the 1256 confirmed cases, 1068 are imported; 135 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 12 deaths, and 1102 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 142 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
