According to The Straits Times, the media regulators of Australia and Singapore have signed a deal to combat the adverse effects of scams on a global scale, with a particular emphasis on cooperating with one another in examining spam and scam SMSes and phone calls.

Additionally, the agreement aims to make it easier for both parties to collaborate on commercially and technically sound responses to spam and scam messages.

The goal of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), according to the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), was to strengthen bilateral ties and collaboration, as well as to a certain extent, the economic integration of the two nations.

The MOU lays the groundwork for further collaboration in the whole telecommunications and digital arena, ensuring that it continues to be a trusted domain, according to Mr. Lew Chuen Hong, chief executive of the IMDA.

In collaboration with telcos, the IMDA has implemented a variety of steps to thwart spammers and scammers and limit their ability to contact potential victims.

The barring of scam calls, including robocalls and those that impersonate staff of emergency services and local government agencies, is another precaution that is already in place.
