The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) in respond to the UN’s “World Ocean Day” action focus on “the prevention of plastic pollution from the ocean”, on June 2 carried out the clean up activity at Dingliao Beach, Linkou District, New Taipei City, attracted the employees of chain companies, where about 248 people from the environmental groups and public went to “Sea You Again TW” (全國揪團認養淨灘) Facebook fan page to register.
The EPA said that reducing the marine debris is a global concern, where more and more people are spontaneously involved in the clean beach activities, practice and respond to reduce the waste sources. This year, in 2019 environmental season, the EPA held a clean beach activity at the top of the beach in Linkou, aimed to be the non-plastic beach. The propaganda from reducing the use of the disposable items, implement the concept of waste reduction, and encourage the people to take the clean beach shuttle bus, respond to the energy saving and carbon reduction.
According to the results of the 2019 Taiwan International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) operation that announced by the Society of Wilderness (SOW), coastal waste consists of 90,9% plastics, and the straw has been in the third place in the top 10 list of Taiwan’s coastal waste for three consecutive years.
The EPA said that the people who participated this time are the chain fast food restaurant employees from McDonald’s and MOS Burger, the environmental protection group Haiyong Studio and the Environmental Protection Bureau of the New Taipei City Government with totals 248 people. They together witnessed the pollution of plastic waste and straws in the coastal environment. Total about 1.134 kilograms general garbage and 51 kilograms recycling stuffs were cleaned up.
In order to avoid disturbing the disturbing waterfowl brooding, the EPA invited the legal person of the Society of Wilderness to assist in the site survey on the day before the event, marked the brooding spots on the beach and on the beach and on the day of the event the clean up personnel taken it away. The EPA has launched four major thematic initiatives; “no plastic food”, “no plastic business circle”, “no plastic consumption”, and “no plastic activities”. It announced that starting from July 1st, the government departments, schools, department stores, and shopping centers to not provide a plastic straw for the food and beverage for dine-in. The EPA called on the people to reduce the waste and it should be started from their own.
