Parents who spend excessive time on their screens may inadvertently hinder their children's language development, according to a study published in *Frontiers in Developmental Psychology*. The research, involving 421 Estonian children, found that children whose parents frequently used screens had lower grammar and vocabulary skills. This is because when screens dominate family time, there is less verbal interaction, a key component in language learning.Overuse of technology often can rob both parents and children of positive interactions and quality time.MoMo Productions/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Experts, like Dr. Jenny Radesky from the American Academy of Pediatrics, emphasize that both parents’ and children's screen habits influence language development. Additionally, merely watching screens together doesn’t enhance language skills, supporting findings that young children struggle to learn effectively from screens.

Parents are encouraged to establish phone-free times, fostering more direct interaction with their kids. While technology is a necessary part of modern life, setting boundaries and reevaluating the urgency of responding to notifications can help create healthier habits. Ultimately, these small adjustments can significantly improve children's developmental outcomes while maintaining family well-being.
