When exercising outdoors during the summer, it's important to take precautions due to the risk of heat-related illnesses. Dr. Leana Wen advises checking the weather forecast and avoiding exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or evening workouts when temperatures are lower. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion, with symptoms like headache, dizziness, and nausea. In severe cases, it can escalate to heat stroke, which requires immediate medical attention.

People most at risk during a heat wave include the very young, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions like heart, lung, or kidney issues. Certain medications, including common blood pressure drugs and some mental health medications, can increase vulnerability to heat by affecting the body's ability to regulate temperature or increasing the risk of dehydration. Over-the-counter medicines like antihistamines can also impact the body's heat response, making it crucial to be cautious when exercising in extreme heat.
