Taiwan-Filipino Worker Brokerage Involved in Illegal Currency Trading Is Being Investigated

The person in charge of Hua-gong-han (華公行), the offices of the Philippine migrant worker brokerage, Yang Junyi, is engaged in the underground currency trading between Taiwan and the Philippines and has illegally exchanged more than NT$ 400 million. He is also suspected of violating the Banking Act. The Investigation Bureau's Taipei City Field Office interrogated 4 offices of Hua-gong-han (華公行) and 7 people involved including Yang Junyi on January 6.

 

Investigators received a report that the company operated by Yang Junyi used to handle foreign worker brokerages and import and export trade. However, the company is suspected of operating underground currency trading of new Taiwan dollars and Pesos since 2013 and provided some Philippine workers in Taiwan with remittances back to the Philippines. In recent years, the company has expanded its underground currency trading service to Taiwanese businessmen in the Philippines. Hua-gong-han (華公行), one of the longest established foreign worker brokerages in Taiwan, has expanded its business that Philippine workers remit their wages back to the Philippines and gradually transformed to assist Taiwanese businessmen in the Philippines in currency trading.

Investigators found that transactions operated by Yang Junyi, who is suspected of violating the Banking Act, are said to have exceeded NT$400 million through the underground currency trading during 2013-2017.
