TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- As torrential rain is falling across northern Taiwan, photos of the flooding have started to surface on social media.

As a convective cloud system has formed over northern Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued a heavy rain advisory for 12 counties and cities and an extremely heavy rain advisory for three counties and cities. The heavy rain advisory is in effect for New Taipei City, Taipei City, Keelung City, Yilan County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County.

An extremely heavy rain advisory has been issued for Taoyuan city, Hsinchu County, and Hsinchu City. The CWB is calling on residents in these areas to beware of lightning strikes, strong wind gusts, and water accumulation in low-lying areas.

As of 8:50 a.m., Hsinchu's Xinfeng Township saw 229.5 mm of rain, and rising. Because of the heavy rain, many sections of Hsinchu's roads have been flooded. The Zhubei Branch of the Xinchu County Police Bureau also issued a Facebook announcement warning of flooding in Zhubei.

As of publication time, 10 CWB weather stations are reporting between 194 mm to 368 mm of rain today, including four in Taoyuan and six in Hsinchu.
