With the impact of the typhoon, Taiwan's agriculture has been significantly affected, particularly with the price of leafy vegetables rising. Many consumers have turned to more stable-priced mushroom products. However, this shift has raised questions about whether mushrooms need to be cleaned before cooking. To address public concerns, the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) posted on their Facebook page "Fresh Enjoyment - AFA," offering practical advice to the public. Most mushrooms actually do not need to be washed (Photo credit: Fresh Enjoy Agriculture YA - Agriculture and Food Agency Facebook)
Do mushrooms need to be cleaned?
According to the AFA, most mushrooms do not need to be specially washed before cooking. For example, enoki mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, shimeji mushrooms, and white mushrooms are grown using sterile bags or bottles without chemical agents. Therefore, consumers only need to remove wood debris and cut off the roots before cooking, without the need for extra washing.
Mushrooms grown in semi-open environments
For mushrooms like shiitake and wood ear mushrooms cultivated in semi-open environments, the AFA recommends a "quick rinse with water" before cooking to remove dust. It is important not to soak them for long and to cook them immediately after rinsing to maintain the best flavor.
