National Immigration Agency has been implementing the "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program" since February 1st of this year, encouraging foreigners who have overstayed (resided) to self-report. A Malaysian student who was enrolled in a graduate program at a university in Hsinchu recently overstayed her visa owing to personal irresponsibility. She eventually went to the NIA Hsinchu City Service Center o with her boyfriend to self-report.

The student said that since she was preoccupied with her academics, she neglected to request a residence permit renewal, which led to her overstaying. She was concerned that she wouldn't be allowed to continue her studies in Taiwan after learning that her residency visa had expired. Fortunately, she recalls the NIA’s "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program." The student only needs to pay a fine of 2,000 NTD and is not required to be under control or to be detained. She can come back to Taiwan to finish her studies as long as she gets a student visa once more after departing.
