[Dream Building] A Cross-Cultural Learning Journey from Thailand to Taiwan: Parent-Child Reading, Inspiring Cross-Border Literacy

The "Dream-Building Project for New Residents and Their Children," organized by the National Immigration Agency, is now in its 10th year. Since its inception, this program has been committed to helping new residents and their children realize their dreams. The participants' journey in fulfilling their dreams has shown incredible passion and perseverance, inspiring countless others with their achievements and joy. This year, we introduce the outstanding awardees in the "Education, Learning, and Arts Program" category. Let's explore their insights, sharing, preservation, and promotion of educational and artistic cultures across various regions.

"Cross-Cultural Learning and Multilingual Talent: The Growth Journey of New Resident Children" - Cheng Xiangxian, Cheng Shitao, Cheng Zhaoxun, and Su Wenxiang

Siblings Cheng Xiangxian and Cheng Shitao have been deeply interested in their mother’s homeland, Thailand, from a young age. They wanted to experience Thai culture firsthand and share it with other second-generation new residents. Their father, Cheng Zhaoxun, invited teacher Su Wenxiang to discuss and develop their project. Through the Dream-Building Project, they traveled to Thailand for language learning and cultural exchange.

During the journey, Xiangxian and Shitao created a fan page to document their learning and cultural experiences in Thailand. Shitao's interactions with local university students facilitated cultural exchange. Upon returning to Taiwan, they organized a presentation to share their experiences and invited their mother to share stories of multicultural exchange, inspiring more new resident children to connect with their cultural roots. "Reading Together, Growing Together: The Light of Inspiration in Parent-Child Reading" - Li Yan, Huang Yanxu, and Huang Jieyun

Li Yan, originally from mainland China, wanted to foster a love of reading in her children. Since her eldest son, Huang Yanxu, was two years old, she has read picture books with him daily. She believes that parent-child reading not only strengthens emotional connections but also enhances her children’s language and communication skills. Through her efforts, she hopes to encourage more parents to read with their children. Supported by her family, she joined the Dream-Building Project to establish a platform for sharing picture book stories, recording videos of her children telling stories to improve their communication skills.

Besides digital sharing, Li Yan also hosts parent-child reading events, inviting other parents and children to join and strengthen family bonds.
