The Ministry of Education has included the new residents’ language in the language learning for the 2019 new curriculum and it will be implemented in the 2019 academic year. The new residents’ language course are about the Southeast Asian language; Vietnamese, Indonesian language, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodian, the Philippines, and Malay languages, 7 languages and cultures from those countries.
The national elementary school students in accordance with the actual needs could choose one of the native languages (Minnan, Hakka, indigenous languages) or one of the new resident languages. The class will be given once per week; while the national middle schools list the new resident languages as an elective course, open the flexible courses according to the students needs. While in the senior secondary schools, these second foreign language courses could be implemented according to the needs of the students and the characteristics of the school.
The 2019 new curriculum is implemented this year and the new residents’ language course is open for the first-year students in the 2019 academic year (not limit for the new residents), giving the opportunity for the children to learn the new languages and improve their competitiveness.
At the same, the implementation of the new residents language courses in the schools also give the teachers a chance to understand the multiculturalism, build respect, multicultural view of acceptance and appreciation, create friendlier atmosphere, expand the children’s international perspective, and improve their future competitiveness.
In order to prepare the 2019 academic year school that will be starting soon, the State Education Department of the Ministry of Education promotes various supporting measures, including 2328 teaching teachers that have been trained in nationwide; compiled 126 volumes text books in total of the 7 countries language learning materials, ensuring the students training course in the rural areas, cooperates with the National Central University and Institute for Information Industry, to provide long-distances live courses, to meet the needs requirement of the course; promotes the demonstration teaching of the leading schools of the new residents’ language courses curriculum in various counties and cities, assist the successful implementation of the new residents’ language course in 2019 academic year.
