According to The Straits Times, according to Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, the Tamil Muslim community in Singapore has contributed to the Republic's multiracial and religious peace via joint efforts that have strengthened the nation's social contract (Jan 15).
Members of the community, for example, contributed a percentage of their income to help the Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) open the Umar Pulavar Tamil School in 1946, which was the first Tamil-medium secondary school in Southeast Asia at the time.

Mr Chan said the institution was essential in advancing and shaping Tamil language instruction in the country, and many alumni have since taken up the torch and became Tamil teachers.

"While the school closed 40 years ago, the Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre continues the crucial purpose of transferring Tamil language and culture to the future generation."

Mr Chan was speaking at the introduction of a book titled Singapore Tamil Muslims, which was published in English for the first time.
The event took place in Newton's Chui Huay Lim Club in connection with SKML's 80th anniversary festivities.
The National Heritage Board and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore have backed the book, which aims to promote a better understanding of the Tamil Muslim minority in Singapore.
President Halimah Yacob and former senior minister of state Zainul Abidin Rasheed have written forewords.
