In recent years, Iraq has emerged as an unexpected yet captivating destination for adventurous travelers, defying its turbulent history. As YouTuber Tommy Driskill, also known as “Dude Abroad,” describes, the experience of enjoying a peaceful breakfast in Baghdad with the backdrop of bullet-ridden buildings highlights the surreal juxtaposition of Iraq’s rich cultural heritage and its war-torn past. Driskill’s 2024 journey was part of a growing trend among Western tourists exploring Iraq’s historical and natural wonders, such as Babylon, the Mesopotamian Marshes, and the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Despite official travel advisories warning against visiting Iraq, particularly due to security risks like terrorism and civil unrest, the country has seen an increase in tourism. Key developments, including the introduction of visas on arrival for select nationalities and the stabilization following ISIS’s defeat in 2017, have contributed to this shift. Tour operators like Lupine Travel and Bil Weekend report rising demand for trips to Federal Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, with more international visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences.Newenham took her all-female group to Karbala, one of the holiest shrines in Shia Islam. Tourists also highlight the warm hospitality and unique insights gained from visiting the country. Janet Newenham, an Irish entrepreneur, has even organized all-women group tours to Iraq, noting the transformative nature of such trips. While challenges like security concerns persist, these tours provide travelers with a deeper understanding of Iraq’s rich history and vibrant present. With increasing investment in tourism infrastructure, Iraq is positioning itself as a destination offering life-changing experiences.
