In order to let new residents understand our country’s election system and procedures, the Taipei City Service Station of the North District Affairs Brigade of the National Immigration Agency (NIA, 移民署北區事務大隊臺北市服務站) recently cooperated with the Taipei City Election Commission (臺北市選舉委員會) to explain to new immigrants the relevant regulations of this year’s referendum through online video and at the same time once again reminded new immigrants not to buy meat from unknown sources, and to take strict precautions against the spread of African swine fever.

According to the announcement of the Central Election Commission (CEC, 中央選舉委員會), the referendum was originally scheduled to be held on August 28, 2021. Because of the epidemic, it will be postponed to December 18, 2021. Chi Kai-Chien (冀凱倩), the leader of the Taipei City Election Commission, pointed out that the law has been amended this year, and changed the right to vote to18 years old. The time for casting votes is from 8am to 4pm. The voters must have lived in the country for at least 6 months from February 28, 2021 (including the day itself) and should have a household registration. They must bring their ID card, personal seal and voting notice on voting day.

This semester, Liu Te-Yao (劉德曜), a second-generation new immigrant, who will be in his third year of studies at the Chinese Department of the university, is 20 years old and said that he will participate in this year's referendum. This is the best way to experience Taiwan's democracy. Liu Te-Yao heard from his mother that there were no referendums in Vietnam. However, in the past elections in Vietnam, the people must participate. It was as lively as the New Year, and men wear suits and women wear national dresses. In addition to teaching new immigrants and their children about the referendum procedures in vivid and easy-to-understand terms, Liu Te-Yao and the NIA also explained about the recent issue of African swine fever prevention.
Su Hui-wen (蘇慧雯), director of the Taipei City Service Station of the NIA, said that this family education course will promote the "3 No Rules" of preventing and blocking the African swine fever through a quiz activity with a prize. The “3 No Rules” are: Do not bring in, do not buy online, do not visit farms.

During the visit, new immigrants were reminded not to discard uneaten or expired meat and its by-products into the kitchen waste bucket of the garbage truck (to avoid mixing virus-contaminated meat to mix with the kitchen waste, which enters the pig farm). Instead, it should be put in the trash can and transferred directly to the garbage truck for centralized destruction! If meat products of unknown origin are found, report to the staff of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine or report to any staff of the Taipei City Animal Protection Office.
Note: The 17th case of the national referendum is "Do you agree that the 4th Nuclear Power Plant be activated for commercial operations?”. The 18h case is “Do you agree that the government should completely ban the import of ractopamine-containing beta-receptor pig meat? Internal organs and related products?” The 19th case is, “Do you agree that referendums should be held on the same day as the general elections if a referendum proposal is confirmed less than six months before a general election?” and the 20th case is “Do you agree that the third natural gas receiving terminal of the CPC (台灣中油公司) should be away from the coast and waters of Taoyuan’s Ta Tan Algal Reef (桃園大潭藻礁海岸)?”
