Counties and cities across Taiwan have gradually started to limit the use of disposable plastic cups in beverage outlets in order to comply with the plastic limitation guideline released by the Environmental Protection Administration in April 2022. Beginning in December 2022, Taipei City will take the lead in limiting the usage of single-use plastic cups in beverage stores. In May of this year, New Taipei City adopted a similar policy and set a maximum fine of NT$6,000 for offenders.

Taiwan has now enacted a prohibition on the use of single-use beverage cups. In July, Taoyuan City and Kaohsiung City joined Taipei City and New Taipei City in starting to adopt it. The Environmental Protection Bureau of Tainan City Government will also start implementation in October after inviting more than 6,000 relevant industries to discuss. Additionally, the Taichung City Government's Environmental Protection Bureau said that it will go into effect on October 1. Within a year of implementation, it is predicted that 106 million plastic cups will be less often used.

The Environmental Protection Bureau announced that it will increase education and awareness before to implementation and, once again, urged companies to make an inventory of their stock and get ready with replacement materials so that they could assist in the phase-out of plastic disposable drinking cups. They will face punishment in accordance with the "Waste Disposal Act" if discovered to have broken the rules. A fine of not less than NT$1,200 and not more than NT$6,000 may be issued in accordance with the rules.
