ASF is going strong worldwide, NIA appeals to foreign nationals not to bring & purchase meat products to Taiwan

Recently, the Taiwan government has detected African Swine Fever (ASF) virus in several parcels sent from Thailand. The Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (行政院農業委員會) thus officially updated the countries (regions) where African swine fever has occurred in the past three years. Thailand, Italy, and the Republic of North Macedonia are added.

To prevent the possible invasion of the African swine fever, National Immigration Agency (NIA) appeals to new immigrants and migrant workers that do not purchase or bring back pork and meat products from abroad to Taiwan to avoid violating the rules and being fined.

To protect the domestic pork industry in Taiwan, NIA has been delivering important messages to new immigrants and migrant workers through multiple channels and in a multilingual way. Urging them not to buy and bring pork, meat products, and processed meat products from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, South Korea, and other infected countries (zones) to Taiwan.

NIA emphasized that the people bringing pork products from ASF-infected zones will be fined up to 1 million New Taiwan dollars. If the individuals are unable to pay, they will be refused to enter Taiwan. If the individuals violate the regulations by sending or purchasing pork products from abroad to Taiwan, one can be sentenced to a maximum of 7-year imprisonment and a fine of 3 million New Taiwan dollars.
