Drug Traffickers Operating Across War Zones, Warns UN Official
"Today, the illegal drug market is becoming increasingly unpredictable, driven by the influence of synthetic drugs," said Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), at the opening ceremony of the latest session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna."Trafficking routes pass through conflict zones and areas lacking the rule of law, from Haiti to the Levant and the Golden Triangle, further exacerbating instability."UN-Coordinated Seizures Include 300 Tons of Cocaine, 240 Tons of Synthetic Drugs, and 100 Tons of Precursor Chemicals. The conference, held from March 10 to 14, gathers experts to assess the current state of the drug trade, address the spread of lethal opioids such as fentanyl, and highlight the achievements of joint efforts. UNODC supports more than 180 border control units across 87 countries to intercept drug flows. In 2024, UN-coordinated seizures included 300 tons of cocaine, 240 tons of synthetic drugs, and 100 tons of precursor chemicals."We are promoting backtracking investigations, connecting law enforcement agencies and prosecutors from source, transit, and destination countries," Waly explained.
