You might think that the baking soda sitting in your pantry is only useful for absorbing odors, cleaning produce, or making baked goods. However, some people are now adding it to water, believing it can improve exercise performance, relieve acid reflux, boost energy levels, and more. While baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is made from natural ingredients, experts caution against its unregulated consumption due to potential risks and complex interactions with the body’s chemistry. 

Though some studies support the benefits of baking soda for exercise endurance and managing acid reflux, there are significant risks, especially with overconsumption. Excessive intake can lead to serious health issues like metabolic alkalosis, which can harm the heart, reduce blood flow to the brain, and cause confusion. It’s important to consult a doctor before adopting this practice, especially for individuals with cardiovascular issues, acidosis, or pregnancy. While baking soda might offer certain benefits, it’s crucial to approach its use with caution and be aware of potential dangers.
