Taiwan issues yellow cold advisory for 5 cities and counties

For the first time this winter, the Central Weather Bureau is issuing a "yellow" cold advisory, meaning that the minimum temperature is expected to dip below 10 degrees Celsius for parts of northern Taiwan and Kinmen.

The advisory will cover New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Miaoli, and Hsinchu County, but not Hsinchu City, Taipei City or Keelung, CNA reported Saturday (Dec. 7).

A low of below 10 degrees could also be reached on the outlying island of Kinmen, according to forecasters.

The advisory will be in effect from Saturday night until Sunday morning (Dec. 8). However, even areas outside the yellow zone in northern and eastern Taiwan could see minimum temperatures of around 11 degrees throughout the weekend, with rainfall fading away in most areas and the mercury starting to rise on Monday.

On Wednesday (December 11), the chance of rain will increase again in the north.

Under the cold advisory system, red denotes temperatures under 6 degrees for 24 hours in a row, while orange means a minimum temperature lower than 6 degrees for less than 24 hours. Yellow signifies a low under 10 degrees or 24 hours of temperatures below 12 degrees.

The temperatures apply to altitudes below 200 meters and have been reduced by 4 degrees for the offshore island of Matsu, reports said.
